⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Soldier: 76 aka John Francis "Jack" Morrison
Age: ~56 years old
Canon: Overwatch
Canon Point: Overwatch Comic: Old Soldiers - After Reaper disappears and Ana and Jack reunite.

Background: Soldier: 76 Wiki & Soldier 76: Origin Short

Personality:
First and foremost, Soldier: 76 could be described as a determined dog on the trail of a scent. His entire purpose in the life that he led now was simply to search out the people and conspiracy that caused the dramatic fall of Overwatch. His determination to that entire effect meant that he was willing to tear into anyone and anything in order to search out evidence and then act upon it, even if previously, the slimy underbelly of secrets and backroom deals were never his area of expertise. This old dog was more than willing to learn new tricks in order to get the job done. He cannot be dissuaded from that goal; he won't be distracted from was the only thing that mattered.

To that end, Soldier: 76 generally worked alone, carrying the mantel from others of being a vigilante looking for justice. He can also be considered a mercenary by some, but he only described himself as a soldier. He had a duty, and he was going to do it. However, he was no longer above breaking into places in order to supply himself, but unlike most vigilante's and some mercenaries, he debilitated and avoided killing where he could. In his own way, he was still a teacher and he understood that people had no way to learn if they were dead. He had spent a war taking lives, and while he understood the necessity of it still, he had allowed himself to become far more of a brawler. He might leave them alive, but he was vicious in combat, willing to beat men (and likely women) to a pulp with his bare hands, especially if those individuals are criminals or those connected somehow to the fall of Overwatch.

That wasn't to say that 76 considered himself a man of the people. He was no longer a hero, barely even bothered to be a reluctant one. He had to be convinced to take part in freeing Cairo from the greedy oppression of Hakim, aiming only for the head of the snake rather than working his way up. It was the same with his attack on the Los Muertos gang where protecting an innocent was a last minute decision on his part rather than a basis of operation. If forced into the situation, he would protect the 'little guy', but he had forced himself as far away from that identity as he could over the past half decade because of how much it had cost him to give and give. Sometimes there was very little left to give on that front.

The isolation was for many reasons. For one, 76 was just plain better than most men and women; he was enhanced, and he had given up the old tactics of thinking as a group to being an individual who would only be slowed by those who might work with him. His combat experience, his SEP treatments, and his perception that he was running on a one-man's war kept him at a distance from others. He didn't want to work with others because that meant some level of attachment, and he had spent years and years putting flags on caskets and sending them home. He had buried friends, he had held the hands of injured agents, and he had, in the end, given everything he was to everyone else that he couldn't do that anymore. He was done, so he worked on his own and kept to himself, making enough connection to garner information and earn what work he would need to continue on his mission. The kind of people he was generally working around were also quick to turn the knife on him, so trust was lacking in many cases.

And that was the crux of the matter and a key part of 76's person. After learning of the conspiracy, after fighting against it and failing, after watching friends die and some turn to the enemy, maybe even be part of the conspiracy that brought his legacy down on his head, trust was very difficult to have anymore. While he could trust someone as far as he could throw them, 76 happened to have a very good throwing arm so he wouldn't bother with trusting anything much. He couldn't even trust that all of those who had been most important to him were dead (looking at you, Ana Amari and Gabriel Reyes). He wasn't in a position to know who to trust, so deep into finding the bottom of the conspiracy that he was, so it was better that he just plain didn't trust anyone anymore. The only one's he showed any amount of trust to happened to be Ana Amari, but even then, aspects of their relationship were fractured because neither of them were the people they used to be.

Even as Soldier: 76, there was a part of him that still was loyal. Career soldiers and having Overwatch as his family, there was a part of him that was deeply loyal, but it was gruff and rough now. He buried it deeply, but in the end, when the Recall went out, 76 heard it, and while he had no interest in returning to any kind of command position, a part of him would always protect the interests of that band of misfits. Most of those who were recalled were people he had worked alongside with, many of them he had trained, and some of them might even be the next betrayers. In that way, he would be there, sniffing at the edges of the missions looking for signs of the new Overwatch falling like the old one, strangled from within.

Jack Morrison had always been about hope. His belief in a better future had always been why he made such a great leader, why so many people were willing to follow him even when the chips were down. He might not as easily share those boyish smiles that allowed him to slip trouble; hell, he might not even show his identity to others, but 76 was still Jack Morrison. He was tired, worn at the edges, his hope that been crushed and gray from bitterness, but the pieces were there. As a soldier, as former Strike Commander, as Jack, 76 was still fighting and trying in his own way to build a better future, to give what little hope he had left in the only way he now had to give. He'd sacrifice it all so others might not have to, and he would see justice done even if it was the last thing that he did.

And Soldier: 76 was more reckless than ever, if that were possible. Like Reaper said in Old Soldiers, 76 was willing to rush a situation without giving much pause to the dangers of the situation to himself. As an SEP candidate, his impulsiveness allowed him an edge that he could overtake most enemies by surprise. When he attacked Hakim's outpost, 76 single-handedly disposed of handfuls of armed and trained men in broad daylight and yes his purpose was to draw out Shrike. However, he charged headlong right into the nest of his enemies the moment he heard Reaper's voice, no care for the danger to himself in the process. When confronted with old ghosts, he simply lost his head and went for it.

Despite his reckless nature, 76 was a very intelligent man and a fine tactician. He was able to read situations well back as Strike Commander, and he used his isolated nature to tip situations that are not in his favour into it. He used terrain and planned his attack on Los Muertos gang, and he also was extremely good at employing his advanced tech to his advantage. He kept to the shadows; he'd slipped borders to avoid authorities; he planned each of his attacks to acquire everything that he requires to keep going. Being reckless and intelligent made him far more successful and dangerous than he had any right to be. It was a tactic that worked, so he had no reason to change it unless the situation required it.

At the end of the day, 76 was tired and worn, but he was angry. He had lost everything from a conspiracy he had not been able to prevent, and it cost many lives in the process, but it also broke up families and opened the way for the Second Omnic Crisis. There was considerable self-blame, and that guilt was thrown out at the world as a gruff, no-nonsense man who was willing to win the war by himself if he had to. He had people to avenge, and there was no rest while his war was there to be waged. People would either get out of his way, or they would fall in line behind his mad change into the next battle. That's what soldiers did, especially ones where they only had a future for others to build.

There was no retirement for career soldiers. Beware an old man in a profession where men died young.

Abilities:
Jack Morrison is a career soldier, and his abilities span wide and expansive from that. He has considerable skill with fire-arms of both basic and specialized grades; he is skilled with close quarter combat such as with knives and beyonettes; he also is skilled in hand-to-hand combat. While not canonically shown, it is likely that Jack also has skill with short-range ballistics such as rocket launchers, military land vehicle operations and an understanding of the uses and limitations of joint missions with the Air Force and Navy.
Sprint: Jack be nimble; Jack be quick; Jack jumped over... well, you get the point. He has an ability that allows him to rush ahead like the reckless man he is, and he is faster than any other character in Overwatch while on foot. He uses this ability to get himself into and out of trouble, and he can maintain his speed for as long as necessary.
Heavy Pulse Rifle: This medium-ranged rifle is cutting edge, most powerful and accurate with three-bullet bursts for long range but with the ability to go fully automatic when at point blank range. This weapon has been Jack's tried and true weapon (with gradual modifications) since the Omnic Crisis, and he is as skilled with firing the weapon as he is at using it in close quarters to bash, block and harass a target.
Helix Rockets: Soldier: 76 can fire a cluster of three rockets from his pulse rifle that, upon impact, will explode causing damage to any living person but also property as well. If used at too close of range, Jack will also take damage and be knocked back from the resulting explosion.
Biotic Field: Throwing down a biotic emitter on the ground, its energy projection will create a 9 foot diameter circle that heals injuries to allies. The field will last for 5 seconds, after which Jack will have to use a charging station to reset the emitter. The emitter itself in indestructible, but for the purpose of the game, it will simply be extremely difficult to hit as it will lock in and bury in soft soil or will be very small.
Tactical Visor: This highly advanced and experimental visor, when activated, allowed Soldier: 76 to instantly lock onto targets in his line of sight and allow him perfect aim. He can switch between multiple targets quickly, allowing him to engage with multiple enemies in quick succession. All potential targets must be in his line of sight.
Super Soldier: During the Omnic Crisis, Jack was chosen to take part in an classified military experiment called the Soldier-Enhancement Program (SEP), designed to create perfect soldiers. He gained superhuman strength, speed and stamina as well as regenerative healing. He was considered a success and labeled Soldier: 76 by the program.
Leadership: While he work ethic and courage impressed the military brass, he really showed all of his strengths when he joined Overwatch in how he managed to bring out the best in those around him while also bringing the wide range of people, cultures and skills together into a cohesive unit. His leadership was based in enthusiasm, hope and a constant push to see the war end and peace brought to everyone, not just the humans. Once the crisis ended, he remained in a leadership position, showcasing his skill for twenty years and earning much respect in the process.

Alignment: Sosyne - Jack is fueled by his anger, and while he is a logical and tired soldier, much of his current state is based around anger for all that happened six years ago. When in combat, much of his anger gives way to calm as that is where he is at his best.

Emotion Sample:
Soldier: 76 was angry, but that was nothing new. His ventures into the forest searching for the assigned misfits who had been stealing landed him in his current situation at the edge of a small pond with carnivarous tree frogs the size of medium dogs. Their croaks were noisy with excitement, their tongues having already sliced up his legs and arms as they wore him down.

Five lay dead at his feet already, but the toxins in their saliva were building rapidly. Death in combat had always been his preference, but this... no, he couldn't go like this. There was too much to do. There was so much left unfinished, so many unresolved conversations, so much need to get home that burned like a fire in him. It fueled his anger, his frustration that he was forced to resort to hunting thieves in a place that would have no impact on his own world, on his own mental state. The randomness, the wasting of time stroked impatience and impatience gave way to frustrated grief which twisted into potent anger over the situation not of his choosing. All plans foiled again because some dying world couldn't hold itself together without the emotion of others.

The air around Soldier: 76 rippled as it sometimes did when he was particularly angry. Normally, it was impotent, just flipping leaves about, but today the air pressure around him dropped steadily as he lifted a hand to his attack visor and activated it for one last stand. His hands shook as he hefted his pulse rifle and his legs felt as if they were turning to jelly as the neurotoxins fought against his regeneration.

Targeting two of the frogs in front of him, he shot them with the last of his munitions before he was forced to twist as one of the last two launched to him. It hit the ripples of his anger and then dropped like a stone, like it weighed far more than its slimy body should. The air around him altered and rippled, driving the creature into the wet mud until he lifted a foot and brought it down on the creature's head until it was unconscious.

His eyes lifted to the last large tree frog in time for its tongue to slash out, and he dodged shakily to the right. Its tongue dragged back just as quickly, catching him along the neck, slicing into the protective flexible armour, and he felt hot blood but more importantly, a sudden flutter of numbness.

No!

Soldier: 76 fell to one knee and then clenched a fist tight as he snarled his ineffectual anger out at the creature, the air around him turning to a small gale and then suddenly stopping as he clenched his fist, dragging the very air from the frog's lungs and causing the structures to collapse from a complete negative pressure. The creature couldn't even make a noise, couldn't draw a breath. It fell from the tree thrashing and then dying.

He breathed hard and fell to his side, slowly releasing the clench of his fist and looked at it. As wild emotions turned to surprise, the air around him returned to normal, only a small gentle breeze moving the grass around him, always pointing back towards town.

Slowly, he sighed and just gave in and lay down. "Getting too old for this crap. When did guns stop being the most dangerous thing at my fingertips?"
