[ Of course this guy would ask that, and despite the vaguest sense of discomfort over the line in general (look, amulet calling is weird, okay), a brief feeling of amusement comes over. ]
No. [ Well. ] Not like that. There's a job going for some weird creatures that've suddenly been attacking people around the warehouses at the port. They know how to drag them out, but sometimes they start flying and they get too fast.
I remembered that weapon you've got. Why don't we work it together? You can see what it's like to speed up!
[This conversation was already a bit baffling, but he supposed he was more comfortable knowing that the invitation was for a mission rather than for developing closer interpersonal relationships.
Missions he could do without issue. They had done one before, and no one had been badly hurt.]
I saw that job, yeah. Are you going to flip around cheerleading or something?
[He suspected Tidus knew a thing or two about that sword he carried around, so he was mostly just checking.]
You're going to cast magic on me. What does it feel like?
[ Well hey, the guy knew. Good, that meant less work in explaining! There's an unimpressed sensation for the cheerleading comment, but at least the guy got there in the end. ]
It's like...feeling loose? You're faster, your body feels faster, but it's not like you can't focus. You're just speedier!
[ Wow don't you miss this guy's explanations of magic. Tidus knows it's not the most helpful, so he quickly goes on: ]
Lemme try it on you and you can see for yourself. If you don't like it... ...it'll wear off eventually! Or I can try slowing you down with more magic? Uh...
[Loose was an interesting way to describe speed magic. He couldn't say he had a problem with that when he stretched before heading out, but if he didn't make him feel like garbage, he would take it. Or at least try it.]
Speed generally isn't a problem, but we can try it.
[He was feeling more confident with this mission, and at worst, at least he would be momentarily entertained. Kid could keep up a good line anyway.]
Let's stick with one spell and leave the rest to time itself. I'm old, so let's not push me too far towards a shallow grave with experimentation. [He's done enough of that in his time.]
What kind of confidence is that in your team mate? Don't worry, you'll feel twenty years younger!
[ It's like you can feel the cocky grin. ]
Meet me outside the Task Centre and we'll go from there! Don't keep me waiting!
[ Tidus won't keep the man waiting anyway!! He won't be as obvious to find as his uniform--with its bright yellow jacket--had made him in the desert, wearing fashion more suited to Verens. He's got a blade with him too, but this time more blue than the Shaarnathian blade he'd rented down below.
But he's still got the same tuft of blond hair and he's still waiting where he promised, hands thrown behind head and not really looking out for Soldier 76; just idly pacing, his eyes up on what's visible of the sky (with branches and the always in-bloom petals of the Tree of Memories in the way. ]
[Soldier: 76 was one who came into situations after surveying the surroundings, making a plan and determining that it was safe for him to slip through and then out of the shadows of pretty much anything. He also happened to be coming up behind Tidus, aware that he could get the drop on the kid if he wanted to.]
Twenty years younger is still double your age, kid.
[How was that as an announcement of his presence being there? Yes, he had arrived, and he was ready to make good on this mission where they would be removing a threat to the docks. His pulse rifle was locked and loaded, slung across his back within easy reach, and like Tidus, he wore the same biker-style jacket and combat gear.]
You weren't waiting long either. [He had arrived first, but he had hidden until the time was right.]
[ If the guy wanted to see the kid jump out of his skin, Soldier 76 gets exactly that, a small 'ergh!' sound to go with it, hands flinging up. Tidus is quick to swing around on his heels after, not even sure what or who to see when he does, the expression on his face incredulous.
But when everything settles and he sees who it is (well, yeah, of course it's this guy), Tidus makes a sour face before regaining his composure, giving his shoulders a shrug. ]
I was waiting long enough, gramps. [ He folds his arms across his chest, a playful cocky grin spreading on his lips. ] So what is that? Forty? Sixty?
[ Some people like to live on the edge by eating fugu. Tidus likes to live on the edge by giving bad guesses on the age of his well-equipped stony elders. It holds the same risk. ]
[Earning such a noise was satisfying, and he wouldn't deny it if accused. He lifted his chin as Tidus flew around to look at him, his attack visor and mask probably the most identifying quality about him anyway. Kid needed to keep his a-game in place for this mission, so he considered this a good work out for that.
And being called gramps wasn't even offensive. The fact was that he was old enough to actually be a grandfather, though he had no children to make that happen. No matter.] You know it's rude to ask a mask vigilante their age, right? Take what age you are physically - not emotionally - and triple it. You just might be in the right range.
[It was about as close to banter as he was going to allow himself thus far, but it was better than their first encounter. At least it showed a little that he was comfortable around Tidus' hyperactivity.]
[ The masked vigilante description receives a small scoff, and his smile doesn't lessen at the ""subtle"" jab at his maturity. ]
Don't think I missed what you just said. [ It's accusatory, but jovially so, even with the slight narrow of his gaze on Soldier, the sharp dismissing throw of his chin. But it's a brief thing, and the air about him is pleasant and salty--a faint tang of the sea. He's grown up with silent, stoic men (or one, really), so it's a positive to actually have such a response.
Nevertheless, Tidus lets his arms unfurl, shaking them out. ]
Okay, okay, good to know you've got a sense of humour still. [ He'll leave the in your age implied. ] You ready to remember what it's like to be young?
Don't think I care that you didn't miss it. I said it, so it's meant to be heard. [Look, he was used to years of being in command and when he spoke, people generally listened to what he had to say. Now he just plain didn't care what people thought of him or what he had to say, and it wasn't that often he decided to talk much anyway.
So yeah, the kid was young, and yeah, he was old. It was a fact that neither of them could escape from these days. At least they decided to work together. Maybe they would learn something working off of each other.
He grunted at the idea he had a sense of humour.] I'm old, not brain-dead. I remember just fine what it was like to be young. I can outpace all the guys half my age anyway. [But he was curious of this speed up technique.]
[ Alright, sometimes he passes for a guy with a sense of humour, because he sure knows how to become Mr. No Fun to cover it up. Tidus would like to ask what exactly being young was like for him (no different to the present day?), but that can wait for why they're here, bringing up his left hand as if in wait. ]
[He tilted his head to the idea of the inquiry of magic, having had considered it for a long while since they had originally spoken to each other. There would definitely be no denial of any kind of edge in combat.]
No, it's not a no. But it would be best to use it when we are on mission and there's a real use for it.
[Unless this was an experiment thing. He wouldn't mind be spry.]
Sure! But we can get there faster with it, and you'll know if you like it or not. [ Not that Tidus minds going at a natural speed, but they did want to test how the guy would take to the spell, and would on the mission be a bit too late, or the right time?
He takes a few idle steps in place. ]
But I guess it's your aim that's more important. [ He gives a tilt of the head. ] Your call! It's an easy spell.
[76 had to issue a grunting chuckle at the idea that his aim was most important, but he knew that wouldn't be the case. For one, his attack visor stabilized targeting when he needed it to and otherwise, he had been a soldier for over forty years, so aim wasn't a big deal at this point because it was practically an extension of himself.
He shrugged and already began to head towards their mission objective. Time was money or so the saying went.] Fine, the faster we get there, the faster this matter is dealt with. You can cast, talk and walk at the same time, can't you?
[The kid seemed hyperactive enough. That much energy had to be good for something, and he honestly was curious of the effects but wasn't about to show too much enthusiasm. He had a reputation to uphold after all.]
[ Tidus lets out a low, unargumentative hum kept short, pointless to drag out when the guy was already heading off. It wasn’t him who felt the need to defend his old man pride of beating the youngsters, but Tidus was as ready to start heading to port as his partner obviously was. Sometimes, it was just easier to let old men be old and grumpy than argue points.
But it does take Tidus a second to figure out what he’s doing, following in pace with 76 to begin with. It really would be easier to either be standing still or running, and not this middle ground where he’s never thought to set off a Haste spell. But it’s a small consideration, Tidus studying his left arm with its fist clenched while keeping something of an eye on where he was going, ditching the plan to cast a Hastega just to be a show-off and letting his pace drop behind Soldier 76 for convenience.
So as long as Soldier doesn’t think to stop to watch or nag (in which instead, he’ll have Tidus bumping into him), Tidus lets out a grunt, a small shower of wisps in colours of polar lights--pinks and blues and greens--coming off his body before he throws open his left hand towards Soldier 76, to an effect that would be harder for 76 to miss.
Because it’s not just about what the spell does to the body, but the brief light show that occurs around it: rings of gold basking and surrounding the target as the actual effects carried within them seep into them, down through the skin and into the muscles. The body becomes lighter, easier to carry; unnaturally so, that it may be startling for someone already walking to prepare for if they have no experience with such a sudden shift to their body.
It has to be a weird sight for anyone else them around to see a guy be looped by rings.
But Tidus will still knock into 76 if stops at any point. ]
